Founder -- Sun; A massive golden tabby tom with heavy paws and golden eyes.
Welcome to SunClan, home of the swiftest minds and paws. Although the land may look barren and deserted, you couldn't be more wrong! It's teeming with life. Though trees and shrubs aren't a common sight around here, all sorts of grasses grow on this terrain, providing shelter for our prey. Rocks also dot the moorland, providing great lizard hunting areas. But watch for rattle-adders. Due to the sky being so open, we are susceptible to falling prey to hawks and eagles -- probably more so than the other Clans. But so long as we don't travel alone, and we rely on our quick paws, we make it difficult to be picked off. You've probably guessed that we're a lot smaller than the cats of ShadeClan or RippleClan, and you're right. But we must stay slim so we can catch our prey and outwit hawks and eagles -- which is more than I can say for the fat furrballs of the other Clans. ... Don't tell them I said that!
Our prey consists mainly of rabbits, pheasants and other moorland birds, lizards, and field mice. Forest prey is known to stray across the border sometimes, so they feast on squirrels and voles from time to time as well. The Clan relies on puddles that pool in hill troughs during rainstorms as our source of water. But during exceptionally dry Sun-drown Placesons, they have dried up and the Clan has had to find water in RippleClan's borders.
Our camp is in a steep ravine bordering a collapsed badger sett from one of the bloodiest battles SunClan has ever faced. For moons, my Clan had been challenged by a collection of badgers that lived so close to our camp that we could hear them through the walls. Then when battle inevitably broke out, the wall between our camp and their tunnels collapsed, leaving the smelly creatures homeless! Victory was ours! Now we've turned the remains of their dens into chambers we hide and even kit in. The caves aren't terribly deep, for if they were, they would risk caving in.
The rim of the ravine is covered in thick wiry grass and thistles, deterring camp raids from other Clans. And if that isn't enough, the fall down the ravine would be enough to stun even the strongest warrior, giving us the upperpaw in battle. It takes experienced paws to make their way down the slope, and careful eyes. There's plenty of crevices and roots to hook your claws into so you can safely reach the bottom of the hollow.
Once you climb down the side of the ravine, you're greeted by whoever's guarding camp at the time. Across from the entrance is a large rock called Highrock, where the Clan leader address the Clan from. Although the surface is perfect for sunbathing on, only the highest ranking cats are permitted up there when a Clan meeting isn't being held. It is also the leader's den, and the entrance is lined with lichen. Beside that is the nursery and apprentice den, a maze of half-tunnels from when the wall collapsed. The insides are lined with the softest grasses and rabbit fur. Across from that is the warrior's den, set within tall stalks of grass. The top of the ravine curves inward here, so we don't have to worry about getting rained on. The medicine cat den is set in a briar thicket near here, neighboring the elder's den. The freshkill pile is set in a sandy patch closest to Highrock.
To keep from getting lost and to keep track of our borders, we have landmarks:
Outlook Rock -- the tallest rock in all of the territories, positioned just right to where even the scrawniest of SunClan cats can stand up and look at all of the moorland, as well as the borders of ShadeClan and RIppleClan. Apprentices are brought here to practice observation skills.
Red Maple Trees -- legend has it that all the blood from the battle that started the Clans seeped into the ground and reached the seedlings buried there. When they sprouted, the maple trees bore blood red leaves, serving as a reminder to SunClan never to let a battle like that happen again.
Sandy Clearing -- long ago, RippleClan's river used to stretch right across SunClan's territory. But it has long since dried, leaving a sandy clearing behind. This area's perfect for training apprentices.
Unlike the other two Clans, our territory also borders the Barn. Even if our reputation claims we're a proud and noble Clan, we'd be lying if we said we didn't drop by here every now and then for a few mice, or a warm place to stay during harsh leaf-bares.
SunClan cats use average battle tactics as well. But a secret defense mechanism is deployed only when we find ourselves battling in the wide open range of the moorland. Surrounded by grass, SunClan cats are scrawny enough to crouch close to the ground and concentrate on the surrounding sounds. When we feel the heavy pawsteps of the forest cats treading closer, we can tell exactly where they are and strike first.
